Protecting Critical Infrastructure with the UIS Rolling Road

Supporting heavy plant while safeguarding buried assets

Protecting the ground surface is important, but in many utility projects, what lies beneath is even more critical.

The UIS Rolling Road continues to support utility and infrastructure projects across the UK by providing a stable temporary access solution for heavy plant while helping protect sensitive underground assets from unnecessary loading and ground disturbance.

Recent projects have demonstrated the versatility of the system in a range of demanding environments. On one site, the Rolling Road safely supported a 15-tonne excavator, distributing the machine’s weight while following the natural contours of the ground to provide a stable working platform without causing excessive surface damage.

On another project, delivered for SP Environmental Utilities on behalf of OCU and United Utilities, the Rolling Road was installed to protect a vulnerable culvert throughout the duration of the works. The temporary access route allowed heavy plant and equipment to operate safely above the buried asset while helping preserve its integrity below ground.

Once the project was complete, the system was removed quickly and efficiently, leaving the site fully restored with no impact on the infrastructure beneath.

Engineered for the Utilities Sector

Across utilities and infrastructure projects, contractors are increasingly required to balance operational efficiency with the protection of existing assets. Whether working over buried services, culverts, drainage infrastructure, or environmentally sensitive ground, maintaining safe access without compromising what’s below the surface is becoming increasingly important.

The UIS Rolling Road has been developed to meet these challenges by providing a robust temporary access system that:

  • Protects sensitive ground and buried infrastructure
  • Creates stable access routes for heavy plant and machinery
  • Distributes vehicle loads to reduce ground pressure
  • Minimises surface damage and reinstatement requirements
  • Adapts to varying ground conditions and uneven terrain
  • Can be installed and removed quickly to keep projects moving

By reducing the risk of damage to both the ground surface and the assets beneath, the Rolling Road helps contractors maintain productivity while supporting safer and more sustainable working practices.

Supporting Safer Utility Projects

As infrastructure owners and utility contractors continue to place greater emphasis on asset protection, environmental responsibility, and efficient site operations, solutions such as the UIS Rolling Road are becoming an increasingly valuable part of project delivery.

From protecting buried water assets and maintaining temporary access routes to supporting heavy plant in challenging conditions, the Rolling Road is designed to provide confidence on site from mobilisation through to project completion.
